Somewhere Between the Woman I Was and the Woman I'm Becoming

On growing older, letting go of expectations, and finding beauty in the life we're living.

I used to think that by the time I reached my thirties, I would have life pretty much figured out.

You know, the kind of figured out where the laundry stays folded, the house stays clean, dinner is planned before 5 p.m., and you wake up every morning knowing exactly what you're doing with your life.

Well, bless my heart.

Somewhere along the way, I realized adulthood looks a whole lot different than the version I imagined when I was younger.

There are careers to navigate, children to raise, relationships to nurture, bills to pay, and about seventeen things running through my mind before I've even finished my morning coffee.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, there's still me.

Not just the mama. Not just the wife. Not just the woman who makes sure everybody has clean clothes and somewhere to be on Tuesday afternoon.

Just me.

The girl who grew up in a small Southern town, surrounded by family, familiar faces, and traditions that seemed so ordinary at the time. The girl who had big dreams and probably assumed that one day she'd wake up and magically feel like a grown-up.

Funny how that works, isn't it?

The older I get, the more I realize that becoming who we're meant to be isn't something that happens all at once.

Sometimes it happens around the dinner table. Sometimes it happens during a difficult season. Sometimes it's in the quiet moments when the house finally settles down and we have a little time to hear ourselves think.

And sometimes it happens when we decide to pick up something we started years ago and give it another chance.

Which brings me back to Southern Essence.

I started this little corner of the internet years ago as a place to share recipes, stories, and pieces of my life. There have been long stretches of silence, a few recipes shared here and there, and more than a few moments when I wondered what I really wanted this space to become.

But I've realized something.

I don't want Southern Essence to be just another place to find a recipe.

I want it to feel like pulling up a chair at the kitchen table with an old friend.

A place where we can talk about the things that matter, laugh about the things that don't, share a good Southern recipe, reminisce about growing up, and maybe even admit that none of us have this whole life thing completely figured out.

I want to talk about motherhood and marriage, about making a house feel like home, about family traditions worth keeping, and about the strange, beautiful experience of watching our children grow older while we're still figuring out who we're becoming ourselves.

Because life isn't always picture-perfect.

Sometimes the biscuits burn. Sometimes the laundry piles up. Sometimes the plans we made for ourselves don't turn out the way we expected.

But there's still so much beauty in the middle of it all.

And maybe that's what Southern Essence has always been about.

Not a perfect Southern life.

Just a meaningful one.

So whether you've been here since the beginning or you've just stumbled across this little corner of the internet, I'm glad you're here.

Pull up a chair. Stay awhile.

We've got plenty to talk about.

Now, I want to ask you something: Is your life today anything like the one you imagined when you were younger?

I'd love to hear your story.

With love,

Southern Essence
