Well, it’s been four years since I’ve posted, but here I am—back at it! If you’re anything like me, fall feels like one long sprint. Between work, keeping up with the kids, and juggling soccer practices, life is full and fast-moving. But despite the chaos, fall always stirs up a craving for those warm, familiar recipes that make a busy evening feel like home.

Today, I want to share a favorite in my household: Honey Bun Cake.

This recipe is a Southern classic that’s as easy to make as it is to love. Think warm cinnamon sugar swirls baked into a soft, moist cake—just like a honey bun, but better.

Why You'll Love This Honey Bun Cake

The magic is all in the texture. The cake has this beautiful, buttery crumb that stays moist even days after baking (if it lasts that long!). When you slice into it, you'll find delicate ribbons of cinnamon sugar tucked inside, giving it that familiar swirl. Then there’s the glaze—it seeps into the warm cake, leaving a slightly crisp top that melts in your mouth with every bite.

It's a little bit of nostalgia wrapped in sweetness and simplicity, perfect for cozy fall evenings. This cake doesn’t need any fancy decorations—just a warm fork, and maybe a friend or two to share it with (if you're feeling generous).

The Recipe

You probably already have most of these ingredients sitting in your pantry. And the best part? No mixer is needed!

Ingredients:

1 box yellow cake mix

4 large eggs

¾ cup vegetable oil

1 cup sour cream

1 cup brown sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

For the glaze:

2 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 baking dish.

  2. Mix the cake mix, eggs, oil, and sour cream in a large bowl until smooth.

  3. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon.

  4. Pour half the cake batter into the baking dish. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the batter.

  5. Pour the remaining batter on top and gently swirl with a knife for that signature honey bun look.

  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. While the cake is still warm, whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Pour the glaze over the top and let it soak in.

A Sweet Pause in a Busy Season

I know life is busy, but this honey bun cake is one of those little treats that makes the hustle feel worthwhile. Whether you’re sneaking a slice with coffee before the kids wake up or serving it at a weekend get-together, this cake is a sweet way to slow down—even if just for a moment.

So here’s to crisp fall mornings, packed schedules, and a little sweetness along the way. Thanks for reading—I’ve missed sharing with you, and I hope this recipe brings a bit of Southern comfort to your home this season.

Until next time,

Maegan
